The Myth in the wild: Abundance rising
Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s Abundance book is increasingly catalyzing political interest and action. (Hear a primer on Abundance in this solo pod.) Democratic governors including New York’s Kathy Hochul, Minnesota’s Tim Walz, Maryland’s Wes Moore, and Colorado’s Jared Polis have invoked “abundance” to attack red tape in housing, transit, energy, and R&D policy. Two congressional abundance caucuses have emerged, YIMBY Democrats are forming pro-abundance chapters, and local abundance events are happening across the country.
Of course, there’s also now an abundance backlash. In a classic progressive-left-versus-center-left framing, the critics of abundance warn that the abundance agenda risks becoming a back door for giveaways to conservatives and companies.
The clash over abundance is both real and reflective of The Moment. Abundance—by emphasizing the need to increase supply in all things, including energy—acknowledges that The Myth of an Easy Energy Transition has already failed. Savvy Democrats are increasingly coming to terms with the fact that climate ambitions must confront sluggish permitting, unworkable overlapping agency requirements, and omnipresent NIMBY power.
Here’s what I see that you need to see:
The rise of abundance politics signals an important shift in the center left. They’re increasingly conceding that supply-side solutions—and the infrastructure to support them—must be back on the table. Now’s the time to position your company as their pragmatic partner.
